Who We R

'I enjoy being a Traveller

I am comfortable as a Traveller

I respect my culture

I am proud of that I love'.

(Bridy : September 2012)

At the behest of the Irish Traveller Movement in Britain I had the privilege to work alongside a group of energetic and charming girls who belong to the Irish Traveller Community. From the onset, the intention of this project was to produce a pictorial representation highlighting the young ladies' positive aspects and achievements. This was to be the girls' personal story, using both text and photographs. This book is a permanent testament to their successes.

The girls were proactive in this process and contributed to the development of the project. Throughout the frank discussions I was amazed at their mature remarks. During these discussions, references were made about the tensions felt between the settled and travelling communities. Their candid observations and comments were responsible, respectful and insightful. These certainly highlighted and reiterated the positive aspects that I always experienced with my many encounters within the Irish Traveller Community.

I am grateful to the Irish Traveller Movement in Britain for enabling me to use the images on this website.
